Greg Hinz of Crain’s Chicago Business: State’s job woes start on the factory floor

Greg Hinz of Crain’s Chicago Business writes that the loss of manufacturing jobs says a lot about the reality of today’s employment in Illinois.

According to data compiled for me by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, employment in the manufacturing sector dropped 24.8 percent nationally between 2001 and 2015. But the decline was 32.6 percent in the seven-county Chicago region and a whopping 38.9 percent for Illinois as a whole. And while the U.S. has gained nearly half a million factory jobs since 2009, the Chicago area and the state are still below water.
